Sam Scratch V.30
By Marc Broster Matrix Software
After geting a printer for my Sam, (PANASONIC KX-P1124i,
boast, boast!), I decided to change Sam Scratch so that I could
use my printer's built in FX, like underline or bold. Most
printers have FX like these, and I have designed the prog so
that you can customize your copy for your printer. I have used a
new menu (Press EDIT twice), so that the new fetures can be
used.
F0-F2, F5-F7, Pressing these key will insert a print code into
the text, and a coloured block will apear. These
codes are picked up by the print routine and
it will send a ten number code to the printer at
that point. To remove these codes, press the
funtion key again.
Edit codes, This allows you to change the name, and ten
number code for any of the print codes.
Remove codes, This removes all the codes in the text (Wow!).
Print codes, This will send a listing of the names and ten
number codes to the printer.
Save codes, This allows you to make another copy of the
program, but with your choice of names + codes
as default.
My changes to the program allow you to edit the
program to your own personal needs, for instance, if you do all
your titles in BOLD, UNDERlINE, and DOUBLE SIZE, you
could define one code to set all these FX, and another to relase
them.
You can use up to 50 print codes, and the 'FREE'
number in the corner tells you how many you have used, the only
draw back of using large numbers of codes is that it tends to
slow the program down a lot, so you are best to put in your
codes when you have finished typing.
Printing text with codes is very slow, but I
might think about puting the print routine in machine code if I
have time. Any way I hope you find the program useful. My
address is 11 Church Road, Saxilby, Lincs, LN1 2HH, if any body
wants to write to swop PD or something (Plese enclose a stamp if
you wnat a reply). I would like a copy of PCG's DTP prog if any
body would like to sell it to me, or swap for some games (PIPE
MAINA and ESCAPE..).
Best Wishes,
Marc Broster
Also from Marc, is an updated version of his POINTER routine.
This is on the ODDS & ENDS menu.....ED

PROG NOTES FOR SAMSCRATCH 3 BY J.SWAN
This program is taken from a mixture of Darren Talbot's V2.0 and
S.N.Goodwin's Ver2.3 of Samscratch. The most obvious difference
is that it now has a completely different presentation
system. The EDIT key now swaps not between menus, but from the
only menu (a bit like TASWORD2'S stop menu) to the text editing
area. The colours have changed to suit my taste-white on black,
and so has the control system. The F-keys now have their own
function depending on whether they are shifted or not. I like it
better this way, and so might you if you give yourself a chance
to get used to it. There are margins so that you can create
tables and columns easily, and it keeps up to a similar speed
to S.N.G's V2.3 by using some of his methods for reading the
keyboard ETC. The loading and saving system now asks for a
device first, and you can specify tape or disc and the drive
number by doing this. Length of filenames is not limited so
that DIRectories can be included, and a DIR is given before
you are asked for this. All is summerised in a HELP page that
can be called at any time during editing or at the menu by
pressing SHIFT and EDIT at the same time. The following hidden
features are available from the menu: CTRL-S:SAVE SAMSCRATCH and
it's associated files to another disc, 7-CLEAR ALL TEXT FILES.
I hope that people find this program easy to use and that
there are no bugs unswatted.

PROG NOTES FOR MDOS MENU SYSTEM BY J.SWAN
This simple program can be SAVED as AUTO on a disc so that it
automatically LOADS on BOOT-UP, and then lists all the files on
the disc-irrespective of DIRectory, and LOADs one of them.
The program saves it'self if loaded as line 9999, and on boot
up, provides a DIR ? - All files on disc whatever their
DIRectory - and asks you to type it in. Now, it finds, the
file number and LOADs using the "LOAD N" facility, thus, you can
LOAD SCREEN$, DATA, SNAP, CODE or BASIC files using it.
That's it- it's very simple to use.
This program is PD, and you can copy it freely.
PROG NOTES FOR SAM CHECKUP BY J.SWAN

Press a key to return to SUPPLEMENT when you are finished.
BIGPRINT DESIGN by D.Tonks
This is a lesson in how to design your own character sets for
use in "BIGPRINT", which was in last issue (9).
It tries to explain how the characters are designed in FLASH,
and how to GRAB them and store them in memory in a form that
Bigprint can use.
It contains a useful grid for your designs.

16 BIT CLIPART converted by D.Tonks
These are 5 MODE 1 screens of Amiga clipart which are run by a
simple viewer program.
Pressing "S" whilst a screen is on view, will save that screen
to drive 1, with the filename "CLIP" plus a number suffix.
Use the cursors to flick backwards and forwards throught the
screens.
I hope to include more of this type of clipart as time and space
allow.
SNAPROM from an article in Format Magazine (converted to disc by
by D.Tonks)
This program will load in a standard Spectrum ROM, and convert
it to a very reliable ROM, complete with SNAPSHOT button
facility.
Once you have the new ROM on disc, this is how to use it...
Load in your new ROM to address 65536
If you now type:-CALL MODE 1 and press RETURN, your Sam will
drop into Spectrum mode.
Load in your Spectrum program of tape as you would normally, and
is should load and run as if on a Spectrum.
Now gently press the NMI button on the back of your Sam, and the
screen border should go multicoloured stripes.
You can now insert a formatted disc into drive 1, and then
press "4". This will save a Snapshot of your Spectrum program to
disc.
If after pressing the NMI, you press "X", you will be taken back
to Sam BASIC. From here you can alter the palette or put pokes
into the Spectrum program. Pokes should go 65536 bytes higher
than they do on the Spectrum. E.G. POKE 45912,201 on the Spectum
would become POKE 45192+65536,201 on the Sam.
When you want to return to the Spectrum program, CALL MODE 1
will take you back.
If you press "3" instead of "4" then the screen on display will
be saved to disc as a screen$.
To reload a Snapshot at a later date, simply load in the new
ROM, followed by the Snapshot file.
Note that the Snapshot files must be loaded by number and not
name.
I've used this system for over a year now and it loads over 90%
of Spectrum Games. I find it much easier to use than the
commercial programs that have to be loaded first and selections
made before the Spectrum program can be loaded.
If you have any problems, please contact me at the normal
address.
OXO by D.A.Lorner
A very clever version of the old pencil and paper game. This
version plays you against the computer, and believe me, it plays
a hard game. I've only managed a win twice up to yet.

GALLERY courtesy of an AMIGA
We're back to Amiga screens again this issue, but there are some
extremely nice ones amongst them, so I thought you might like to
see them. They are all compressed, but I've included a routine
that will save off a screen as a SCREEN$.

XTREE by A.wright (modified by D.Hall)
A Masterdos program, that allows you to see whats in all the
directories and sub-directories, without all that messy typing.
The program has instructions included, and is very easy to use.

PONTOON by G.W.E.C.
A nice redition of the ever popular card game, utilising the
card set that was in a previous issue of the Supplement.
Break in to the program and see how it's been done.

PC PRINT by Ian Spencer
Yet another piece of PC emulator kit for your Sam. This time
Ians come up with a program that will read in a PC file, and
display it either on the screen or to the printer directly.
If you have used the previous PC/Sam programs, this one will
come in very useful.

VAT ADDER by D.Hooper
Have you spend hours trying to work out the VAT on something
you've seen for sale in a magazine?, well no need any more. This
program takes the cost, and either adds or subracts the amount
of VAT your require.
CATTERPILLA by K.Montgomery
A favourite of mine, is this game. Guide the caterpilla around
the screen collecting apples. With each apple collected, you
grow longer. How long can you stay moving on the screen, without
hitting either yourself or the border?

POINTER CODE by M.Broster
This is actually an update of a previous program. The pointer
routine which was published in an earlier issue can now be made
faster, by merging in this new piece of code.

CYCLES by A.RIGLEY
A demo which shows just what can be done cycling the palette on
SAM. The routine was originally printed in Format, but Andrew
has put it on disc, so you done have to spend the time yourself.
